Hi. In a child, once it is born, three main structures must be closed namely, foramen ovale, ductus arteriosus and ductus venosus. In the fetus, they were acting as a bypass for the circulation. Upon birth, mostly in few days, it should be closed by itself. Foramen ovale is the structure between the atrium and ventricle.
