Can Albuterol be used occasionally or is it cumulative?

Question:
My 2 1/2 year old was prescribed Albuterol when he was wheezing and coughing with no other symptoms about 6 months ago. This week there was a fire in our area and he has been waking up with a cough and wheezing when he is sleeping. Can Albuterol be given when he has symptoms or does he need to take it regularly? I still have his nebulizer and prescription from last time he had to use it and wondering if I can give him so to clear up the wheezing.

He has no other symptoms.

Answers:
Albuterol is what is called a "rescue drug" which means the effect of it is immediate so it is only to be taken when wheezing, Shortness of breath, dry cough, ect... are present. It can be taken every 4 hours as needed, if you child needs it more often then that (the wheeze comes back within 4hrs) then you need to go to your doctor or ER so they can monitor him appropriately in case he needs it more often then every 4 hours.
My daughter was on albuterol as needed, but it's always a good idea to check with your child's doctor.
yes, albuterol can absolutely be used as needed, in fact it should probably always be used on as needed basis, but don't hesitate to use it when it is needed.. so yes, use your nebulizer.
I am neither Doctor or nurse but from experience of 2 children ,I gave my own children their pumps regularly. Both children have grown out of their Asthma but from one has come an inheritance to his child. Who has his Salbutamol (Ventolin) regularly as do I now.
