Medical Mystery, A new disease only 1 person is known to have, ever. What would you recommend?

This medical condition is a very unique one, and I am hoping someone with a brilliant medical mind can help get my friend the medical answers he needs. This condition in succent form: He develops red fever patches on his body, mostly on his legs. These patches cause him to have DVT (Deep vein thrombosis) and the clots only occur where the red patches are. If he develops one serious enough, he gets the sweats and shortly after the chills. This process is repeated one right after the other, very fast. He has tried almost everything. Lovonox shots, hot/cold treatments on his spots, you name it. Doctors are letting him name this disease so this is the only known occurence.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Sounds like some allergy. He needs thorough check up & investigations. If already done, I would like to have a look. Has he been travelling around much?

I would seriously recommend a teaching hospital like Ann Arbor Michigan or St. Marys hospital in Saginaw Michigan, Covenant Hospital, again in Saginaw Michigan. The Mayo Clinic in Minnesota, Rochester, Minn. I was going to work in a Med Lab there. A very fine teaching hospital, you have to guarantee them you'll stay three days and let all the doctors available that want to see you do their thing. There are places to stay like the Ronald McDonald house.

I assume he has been tested for just about everything and that's why you're referring to it as a mystery. I seriously doubt the fact that it's new, his doctors just haven't found an answer yet.

Get him to a teaching hospital or someplace where research is extensive.

As far a brilliant medical minds, you wont find them here and anyone with an iota of intellect wont be able to diagnose your friend over the internet. I can't tell anything from the description you've given.

Well, first of all I am no doctor however, when you mentioned red fever patches on his legs the thought of autoimmune disease comes to mind. He could have a possible autoimmune disease that is causing this reaction (which sounds like inflammation) and since it is causing this reaction the rest of immune system is trying to correct it or attack it which is causing the DVT. Just a thought.

I am suspecting some kind of autoimmune disorder. Ask the doctor if they can take his blood and "clean it" through dialysis. I can't remember the exact name of the treatment but they hook you up to a machine, and it basically removes the autoantibodies (toxins). I am thinking about plasma exchange. The plasma in the blood is replaced or cleaned. Hope your friend feels better!
