You mean the fat in the abdomen.
You re right it is important. Because the visceral fat is much more dangerous causing the "Metabolic syndrome" and can cause Hypertension, Dyslipidemia, Diabetes and Atherosclerotic vascular disease.
Exercise regularly. Swimming, playing sports, walking, sex..any activity burns those extra calories. Also decrease fats in your diet and eat more fruits and vegetables.
If everything else fails, there is surgery...liposuction. Just suck the fat out..
Sit ups

There is no way to target weight loss on a specific body part. You can do ab exercises and gain muscle, but you won't see the abs until you lose weight. The only way to do that is cardio and diet.
eat less, exercise more. forget the sit ups you can't target fat loss.
some say sit ups are bad but it works here are a few other things you can do instead of sit ups!
1. when you normally breath out your stomach goes in and when you breath in your stomach goes out! try switching it when you breath in push your stomach in closer to your spine. When you breath out push your stomach out.
2. Sit ups but not full sit ups! sit down and move your body up to where you feel the pressure stay there and do small movements up and back down your movements should be no more then 1 inch.. not sure how go this is for your neck but i don't have neck issues!
3. perch yourself up on your shoulders/back and do an upside down bicycle use your arms to keep your lower back off the ground and close to vertical posisition!
4. leg lifts the classic lay on your side and lift your leg up this gets the sides of your belly!

Running, sit ups, if you want try using fat strippers they are helping my training partner but you must exercise too they won't work on their own.

also eat smaller meals more often. Yeah, eat less, and make sure its healthy food. But if you have 5-6 snacks or light meals a day, instead of 3 bigger meals, then it helps to improve you metabolism. This combined with exercise wil help.
Sit ups and crunches
General exercise and diet. You cant spot reduce. I know when I started going out running it was my legs that ached the next day it was my stomach muscles.
