Thanks for asking,
Tuberculosis affects many organs in the body. However, it is commonly attributed to the lungs which, is called pulmonary TB.
Pulmonary TB in adults is basically diagnosed with the positive sputum culture. However, chest radiograph(x-ray) and other clinical findings along with the sputum results will assist the diagnosis.
Treatment for Pulmonary TB is basically achieved with the combination of anti-TB drugs at least for 6 months. To begin with the drug therapy, the sufferer will be started on anti-TB drugs such as ,Rifampicin, Isoniazid, Pyrazinamide and Ethambutol for first 2 months and only the Rifampicin and Isoniazid will be continued for next 4 months to complete the drug therapy.
Full cure is possible which, depends on the compliance to the drug therapy.Reduction if, possible complete cessation of smoking is advised during the drug therapy. Most of the patients will start showing improvements on their clinical symptoms soon after 2 months of treatment which, often make them to think leave the drug therapy behind. The consequences of this is multi-drug resistance TB which, is difficult to treat and requires specialised anti-TB drugs(secondary drugs). These second-line drugs posses unfavour side effects ,which is the another reason, why persons are non-compliant to the drug therapy.
As a carer or health care professional, precautions need to be taken in order to avoid spreading the bacilli to the environment and to himself. When, the sufferer has an active TB he or she may produce productive cough(producing lot of sputum) which, carries high risk . Hence, advise the person to use a cloth to cover his/ her mouth while, coughing and the sputum should never be spit in a common places. The carer is advised to use facemask to protect himself while, caring the sick and follow standard hand hygiene practice.Isolation is important which is commonly done in the health care settings. It is better ,not to allow kids to visit the sufferer, when there is an active TB. Kids those live in close cotact need to be immunised for TB if not done previously.
REMEMBER, TB IS CURABLE WHEN ADHERED TO THE DRUG THERAPY AND STANDARD TREATMENT.
Hope, this helps.
