Sick with a temperature of 97.1 ??

You really haven't had a significant fever, certainly nothing that wouldn't be expected with a virus. It doesn't mean you aren't sick, or that you can't feel more feverish than you are. Viruses mess up your whole system and cause lots of odd symptoms, including feeling at odds with the thermometer. Just keep with a light bland diet and lay off the dairy products. Drink plenty of fluids, and rest. The virus will pass on it's own, usually in about a week. You can always take Tylenol for the aches and pains, and as long as you hold liquids down and aren't having a fever over 102 that won't come down you will do fine. Your body functions quite well at elevated temperatures, where the virus can't. It's actually a good thing to help control the virus until the immune system can whip virus butt. Your end of things is just to rest and drink, and let your immune system do what it does best. The thermometer is probably right, although an oral temperature is not very accurate. If you really need an accurate temperature, well- that's a job for the rectal thermometer. It doesn't matter what the thermometer says, on the low end, unless you are in the snow. As long as you are walking and talking, and not freezing to death, it's not a worry.
People's temperatures vary. Not everyone is at 98.6 all the time. Your fever wasn't that bad at 100, and your temp isn't too low at 97.1. Mine's always below 98. Don't worry so much about it. Just drink a lot of fluids and get a lot of rest. If you're still sick in a couple of days, call the doctor.
Not unusual to wake up with a lower temp. It may rise as the day progresses. Or it maybe near the end of the virus.
