What could be wrong if my right arm and leg sometimes stop working?

It's not actually me this happens to but my friend and she refuses to go to the doctor...She has to move her fingers back and forth to unstiffen them.it's very painful.

M.S or arthritus or even perhaps a stroke, she may even just be sleeping in a funny position in a draft at night.

Please try to persuade her to go see a doctor, if you cant find someone who can.

You really get your friend to go to the doctors because it can be Multiple Sclerosis(MS). MS can cause a person to become disable. The fact that her symptoms come and go away means that she can be having a possible flare up. She should really go to the doctors before new symptoms appear or the stiffness not go away.
