Just received an e-mail from a friend whose husband has been diagnosed with cancer on his vocal chords.?

Question:
Tues. morning they will be doing different tests...one of which is a PET scan. Can someone please tell me exactly what that is? Thank you.

Answers:
Sorry to hear about your friends husband. I have a brother with laryngeal Cancer, but in remission for over 14 yrs, but recently diagnosed with esophageal cancer. I also go to Ear nose and throat specialist with best friend cause she has been diagnosed with stage 1 tumor on larynx. PET scan is the most reliable non invasive test, it stands for postiron emission tomography, a 3rd generation test, first was CT scan, then MRI now PET scan. Sure beats a biopsy, but it may come to that. My thoughts are with you and your friends. If he smokes and/or drinks, that is a highly contributing factor for that cancer
