What could cause the heart to "skip a beat" out of nowhere?

Its nothing to be afraid of..Sometimes it could be anxiety, a little adrenalin rush...I have a condition called Barlows Syndrome which is another term for mitral valve prolapse or the click syndrome. It is a congential defect. It is actually quite common but can be alarming. It means the the mitral valve in the heart is not closing properly so a rush of blood, more than usual goes through before the valve closes again, and that causes the heart to flutter.. If you feel this on a regular basis with no pain, then you have nothing to worry about, but to ease your conscience see a physician...Good luck
I had the same thing happen to me. I went to the Dr and he said too much caffeine and stress can cause it. I would definately call your Dr though to be on the safe side.
I have the same thing it's called palpatations. It's genetic for the most part... sometimes it can mean there is a structural abnormality but generally it's a pretty benign condition. No harm. If you're worried about it you can always go to the doc and ask them to take a listen. As long as it doesn't hurt or cause you shortness of breath or trouble with stamina you're fine. Mine happen mostly when I'm laying in bed on my stomach. Seems to be the same time of night and the same position... feels like your heart is jumping out of your chest!

When you're dealing with your heart, you can never be too careful. But, I've had that too where I'm sitting and if feels like it'll start pumping faster. Kinda weird, but nothing to worry about.
watch your caffine intake. that may affect it but i think everyone has it every once in a while.
