NHS walk in centres? and specialists?

Question:
just curious ive heard about these NHS walk in centres in the UK, there isnt any in my local area but was just wondering what exactly are they?

are they pharmacys? like emergencys places but less severe or is it like a doctors clinic?
or is it all in one? ive never been to one before.

could anyone clarify what they are and what they do?
my guess is you walk in and see someone like a doctor after and wait to be seen?

another thrown in question.. can you see a specialist or private professional doctor (like a referal)?
how do i get contacts etc?

my current doctor isnt helping. i respect his thoughts.. but he doesnt understand how bad my problem is atm and want further tests.

Answers:
My advice would be to tell your GP exactly what you have said here. There are financial constraints on all GPs now so they refer less. He could probably recommend a specialist that you could see privately, or you could ring up your local private hospital who could put you in touch with the relevant specialist.

If you have no joy with him, change GP.
they are like a gps in one way, they don't treat emergencies, you still have to go to a &e for that. they are run by nurses, they can dress cuts, burns, give general advice and treatment, incoulations etc. more difficult probs are still best to see your own gp about.
You wont get the specialist treatment you want at a walk in centre. They are designed for minor injuries and whilst a doctor can be bleeped they are usually nurse practitioner run.
You are entitled to a second opinion, so if you doctor ids being less than sympathetic you can ask for a specialist referral.
