While in surgery, a machine can take over the work done by the heart (pumping blood)and lungs (pumping oxygen - breathing ).
To initiate a heart-lung bypass, the surgeon must first impair the bodies own clotting system. Otherwise, the patients blood would immediately clot upon exposure to the plastic tubing and artificial surfaces inside the heart-lung machine itself.
Thinning of the blood (or anticoagulation) is done by first administering a powerful anticoagulant called heparin. Once clotting is impaired, a large drainage tube is placed in the upper chamber of the heart (called the right atrium). This tube drains the blue blood from the patient into the heart-lung machine. Then a smaller tube is placed into the arterial system so that red blood can be returned to the patients body where it is needed. The most common site for this tube is in the aorta (just above the place where the vein grafts will be connected).
Once these "cannulae" are placed into the patient, and connections are made to the heart lung machine (via plastic extension tubing), the machine can now take over the pumping action of the heart, and the oxygen transfer action of the lungs, as described above.

you cant, if your brain does not get oxygen for a certain amount of time, all brain activity stops, soon you will just die off, all bodily functions will cease, and you will die

you know you can't force your body to suffocate? It's the natural reaction for your body to spazz out when it needs air.
It is highly not possible because if you want to live you must circulate oxygen to your hear to mind. Otherwise you may die. Don't practice that and don't develop your's thoughts on this way. It may lead you to your life end.
Donate all possible organs so tht even after you stop breathing,your donated organs will stay alive in someone somewhere in this world.

Generally you can survive 3 minutes without air, 3 days without water and 3 weeks without food.

u can stop ur breathing till the air left in ur lungs is V.C[ vital capacity] after that u will run out of oxygen and ur lungs will automatically take in air. it iwillno longer be in ur control..

Why should you do that?
Yes you can but not for more than a minute or so that also when you hold your breath voluntarily otherwise not your doctor ill hav to put you on heart lung bypass machine why should he ? You are normal one more condition is sleep apnea whig occurs while sleeping but you wake within seconds of it
