Clinical interrogate?

A nurse is administering pilocarpine eye drops.the nurse instructs the client to press on the nasolacrimal duct for 30secs because the medication can have some systemic side effects, such as affecting the heart rate.what is tha rationale for pressing on tha nasolacrimal duct?

Answers:    The nasolacrimal duct empty into the rhinopharyngeal mucosa where much of the administered drug would be held into the bloodstream (~30-80% of a drug). To reduce the amount of drug that enter the bloodstream (and reduce systemic side effects) pressure is placed on the nasolacrimal gland occluding it for nearly 30 seconds.

This method also increases the efficacy of the treatment as it increases down exposure/contact time with the eye.

Hope this help
