What is congestive heart failure and is there a cure?

Question:
Husband has been diabetic for 23 years, has had bypass surgery 9 yrs. ago, currently has swelling in feet and legs, 72 years old, and can hardly breath after walking or any exertion.

Answers:
Congestive heart failure means the heart is not able to pump blood into the system, either to the lungs or to the systemic circulation. The heart is actually two pumps, the right and the left side. the right side pumps to the lungs, while the left pumps to the system. The symptoms of having edema or swelling of the legs is compatible with a right sided failure while the shortness of breath on exertion is compatible with left sided heart failure, as well as low cardiac output. Go to your doctor because your husband definitely needs evaluation and probably cardiac support drugs or diuretics.
Congestive heart failure is a chronic condition where his heart is not able to pump enough blood to meet his body's needs. The blood backs up in the system, which is probably the reason he is having the problems with the swelling in his legs and feet. His doctors should be working to try to figure out what is actually causing the problem and trying to eliminate that. In the meantime, things you can do to help would be to almost eliminate the salt and sodium in his diet, and try to keep his legs up to help with the swelling. His cardiologist should be keeping pretty close tabs on his heart, and making whatever adjustments to his medications that need to be made. There are some medications that can help with it as well, but those have to be coordinated with the doctors treating him. Congestive heart failure is a symptom of something else, it's not usually a disease of it's own. It can be reversed or controlled, so it's not hopeless by any means. But the person you really need to talk to is your husbands cardiologist. He's the most familiar with the overall condition of things and the best one to advise you. Just make a list of your questions and concerns, and ask. Between the efforts of the two of you, it's possible to reverse the problem, or at least control it to a great extent.
Congestive cardiac failure occurs whenever the heart is unable to meet the needs of the body, by pumping enough blood. Cardiac output is the amount of the blood pumped by the heart. So when there is increased demand and the heart starts to pump harder and finally fails due to overload. This is called heart failure.
I got congenital heart failture. It mean that his heart is not circlating right. The blood goes to the heart instead of going to his complete body.I had open heart surgery at the age of 25.Two Heart attacks on the operating table.I think it best to talk to his doctor.Well if he need heart surgery like me he probably survive. But I had only 3% to live. Not trying to scare you.All depends on how bad his heart is.Maybe his doctor will put him on some strong medicine.I still have to take heart medication. It been 3years.I don't thinks it a cure but medicine helps you get better.
