Obsessive Compulsive Disorder?

Question:
Is there a gene that controls OCD? Has it been found? I know scientists have found that it's more common in families, but I want to know if there's an actual gene.

Also, how come OCD seems to be more of a fad than an actual disorder now? For example, I've met twenty-some people who said they have OCD. When I asked them if they have been diagnosed by a doctor, every one of them said no. They just self-diagnosed themself. If OCD were that big a deal, why wouldn't they go to the doctors or pyschs, and get medicine to get treated?

Also, the whole light thing. Over half the people I met who said they have OCD, also said their OCD makes them turn on or off lights, and sometimes a certain number of times, when they enter, or leave a room. I've never seen them do this in school, churches, or work offices. How come their "OCD" only shows up in their most favorable places?

OCD is a very controlling disorder. my husband has it and is on medication or it would drive us all to drink! They have certain things they HAVE to do and recheck a hundred times to make sure they DID it. They worry non stop that they did not do a certain thing and continue rechecking it...it is a terrible thing to have, no one should wANT it.
that happens because those self diagnosed people do not truly have the disorder. it is a very real disorder that affects each person differently.
I have OCD and have had it for half of my life. Most of it led to my anorexia a while back. I switch lights off & on. I can't switch my lights off by myself now.. I also tap things repeatedly and have to check things are locked. I also re-arrage things in certain ways. It annoys alot of members of my family. I clean my room constantly and don't eat much food in case of contamination. This only happens at home and only occasionally happens at work. I don't know why this happens but I have got a diagnosis off my doctor so I can oficially say I am a sufferer of OCD. I have also been recieving something called Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (often reffereed to as CBT) -- as this helps with the obsessive compulsions.
The people that you mentioned that self-diagnose themselves with OCD are most likely attention-seekers. OCD affects me alot and i didn't even know i had it until a doctor noticed my behaviour and I know anybody that knew they had it would get help from a professional or therapist. They wouldn't suffer alone and i know that for a fact.. xx
There are no genes that control OCD, some people may be predispositioned to be diagnosed with OCD given the right environment, but the disorder can't be predicted, just like many of other psychological disorders. If you haven't been diagnosed by a doctor, you don't have OCD. People tend to self-diagnose, and exaggerate on things. Most of the people who say they have OCD just means they have a habit they can't get rid of, and they don't know why they do it. Obsession, intrusive, repetitive thoughts or images tha tproduce anxiety, or compulsions, the need to perform acts or dwell on thought to reduce anxiety, can often times occure by itself, and most people generally declare themselves with OCD when only one of the two symptoms are present. For someone to be diagnosed with OCD, their repetitive behavior would have to interfere with their daily life. Symptoms of true OCD generally doesn't discriminate between private and public places, so symptoms showing up in their most favorable places should already tell you that they don't have it severe enough to be diagnosed with the disorder.
