Can I quit taking hydrochlorothiazide suddenly if blood pressure is now normal?
Question:
Answers:
No, it is because of this diuretic + any other HTN medication that you have attained a normal BP. Since you have not mentioned a complete history of your disease, it will be better to consult your physician ; he might taper it off or give you substitutive advise e.g. take it twice a week depending on your underlying pathology.
NO. That is reason pressure is normal. See your doctor and see if he wants to gradually cut the dose or leave it alone.
High blood pressure is nothing to guess at.
shouldn,t be a problem
don't stop taking your thiazide diuretic suddenly since this could cause hyperkalemia, this is very bad and you could end up on a morgue cot. Thiazides cause you to loose potassium at a high rate and when stopping them it could spike and cause ventricalar tachy or fib. you will taper off. Don't chance it.
And why do you think your blood pressure is normal, Maybe because of the HCTZ, you need to keep on taking it.
Absolutely, NO !! HCTZ ( hydrochlorothiazide) is a medication that is used to treat HTN ( hypertension) and edema( swelling). Patient teaching: Take the drug with food to minimize getting an upset stomach. Take the drug in the morning to avoid frequent trips to the bathroom during the night. If you are taking this twice a day, then take the second dose in the early afternoon. Avoid sudden position changes. Basically, this means if you're lying down, get into a sitting position and stay sitting for 1-2 mins. If you are already in the sitting position, stand up slowly.Sudden positions changes can cause "postural hypotension". In other words, can lower your blood pressure, causing dizziness/lightheadedness. Use should be using a sunblock if you are outside because this medication can cause photosensitive reactions : redness, bumps on your skin. Never stop taken the medication unless., your prescriber tells you. Bottom line, contact your Doc. He/She may decrease the dose and will monitor your blood pressure to be sure that it is stable. I hope that this helps. When you do see your Doc, bring your current blood pressure readings.
Absolutely not.
The reason (presumably) that your blood pressure is fine, is because you ARE taking HCTZ.
