Occipital encephalocele is a defect in the front or back of the skull where a portion of the brain and its surrounding membranes protrude, and is a common symptom for the lethal inherited disorder, Meckel syndrome.

The other most common symptoms of Meckel syndrome are multiple cysts on the kidneys (polycystic kidneys), and extra fingers and/or toes (polydactyly).
