Agoraphobia?

Question:
How can you deal with agoraphobia? After suffering for years, i have been told by a phsychiatrist that i suffer from it. What treatment am i looking at to get better?

Answers:
If you've been told you have this then haven't they followed it up with treatment or by telling you what to do next etc ? Probably a good idea to speak to your GP - most do phone consultations these days ! Best advice would be to take it slowly and go out for a few mins just outside your front door, then moving further away :o) take it slowly - one day at a time
ummm
I have experience with it, and can tell you by seeking therapy by a specialist and with the help of God, I was able to overcome it. God Bless ... ^_^
My mother suffers fro it and the best way to deal is to slowly work your way outside. Join a club or something you are going to need to go to get out of the house. Do you have panic attacks? Have the doctors put you on any medicine?
research about it in the wonderful world of wikipedia<3

try to get out some more and ask your psychiatrist to suggest any techniques or some counselor who specializes in helping agoraphobics. He/She shouldn't just diagnose you and push you out - they need to HELP you so ask for the help. Try to join some support groups (where you go OUT not some internet groups at home)

"Agoraphobia can be successfully treated in many cases through a very gradual process of graduated exposure therapy combined with cognitive therapy and sometimes anti-anxiety or antidepressant medications. Treatment options for agoraphobia and panic disorder are similar.

Exposure treatment can provide lasting relief to the majority of patients with panic disorder and agoraphobia. Disappearance of residual and subclinical agoraphobic avoidance, and not simply of panic attacks, should be the aim of exposure therapy. "
Councilling and slowly bit by bit facing it to try and overcome it. All phobias are difficult to deal with, but in time you have the strength and ability to overcome this. Good luck x
(I have social anxiety and being around people and in social situations is very hard for me-you arent alone in fearing something many others can easily face-some of us just need a little help to overcome these things) xxx
Well-as a person who suffers with fear of social situations, the only way to cope is to gradually face the fear. Take it a day at a time venturing outside for short distances and gradually building them up. Best to take a friend with you for a few times first. I have found that God helps me too when I pray.
The treatment you are getting should help, talking to your phychiatrist about it and what may be causing it can help you. Get through it in your own time and relax, do not rush into getting over this problem, do it in your own time and dont be negative, lots of people have the same problem, so you are not alone. I hope this helps you, and good luck!
try just sitting on your porch for a few minutes a day with your eyes closed. then keep going farther and farther :]
I suffered with that phobia many years ago. I got into therapy & found out why I had the phobia. That made it all much easier to understand. My family doctor put me on a low dose of an antidepressant, which got rid of my anxities, which made day to day living more bearable. My agoraphobia stemmed from having to deal with so much stress(family crap, new state, no neighbors, etc) in my life & I felt safe inside my home, where I didn't have to deal with anymore outside stress, so I became a prisoner in my own home. In therapy, I learned to go outside each day into the yard, & in time, I was once again able to go shopping, etc. Get into therapy & see about being put on a med that will help you through each day. I no longer have that phobia, but I'm still claustrophobic, which surfaced when the agoraphobia did. My claustrophobia was a result of something that happened in my early childhood. I just avoid situations that may heighten the claustrophobia. All the best to you, & be patient, as you will be cured, just give it time. :)
A good counsellor could help you overcome it or you could try hypnotherapy. Both could be useful to you, good luck.
HI you must go out with a pal and face up to your fear de sensitise take short trips at first then do a little walk by yourself, but you must do this nothing will happen to you you will not faint or have a heart attack, its fear of fear that's causing this the reasons are unknown it may come from childhood, an hypnotist might help but Facing up to it is your best cure.. i suffered from it years ago but faced it and never looked back so come on get out, you are missing out on so much, very good luck to you,
Counselling,I dont know who to recommend,yr g.p. is a start but he wont be up to doing the counselling.I had and still have a great pair of people who helped me.it took a long time but I got my head round the fact the the panic that goes with agraphobia,as overwhelming as it is and frightening wont and cant kill me,it makes me feel like s*** for the period I am out but thats all it does.I am trying to say make it little, unimportant, and unthreatening, convince yourself its so trivial why should you be bothered by it,i know it sounds flippant.Instead of dreading going out for hours before you actually do,dont dwell on how you are going to feel once out - Just GO deal with the feelings when your out there, wade in as if you hadn't a care in the world,it sounds silly but It works for me - you'll notice how nothing bad happens to you.I smile to myself now when I think what the hell was I so afraid of,and I was very ill with it honestly.Good luck, dont worry, try find a therapist/counsellor,try the tricks I mention. Its not as hard as you think its going to be.
