Anti depressants, and attacks?

Question:
i have just been prescribed 25mg of sertraline, (zoloft). and i was wondering if why sometimes i feel it working, and other times i don't . its been about three weeks, shouldnt it start to kick in? or is the dose too small.

also i get really bad anxiety, if somehting goes wrong, or even the smallest problem, i flip out, and go crazy sometimes. i cry, and i will have to punch something. my knuckles are constantly swollen. sometimes i feel as if eevery thing is ruined and im failing life. is this any sort of anxiety, or panic attack?

Answers:
Hi, sorry to hear you are feeling so bad. Drugs can take a bit of time to kick in, but if you don't feel they're helping, go back to the doctor and tell him. It really sounds as if your anxiety is overwhelming and could be a panic attack. Either way, the following steps should eliminate (or at least significantly reduce) your panic attacks and anxiety, and also help with your depression:

1.Breathe properly - if you control your breathing, you control panic. As soon as you notice the signs of anxiety, check your breathing: breathe in slowly through your nose pushing your tummy out (to the count of 5 or so). Breathe out slowly and for a bit longer (to the count of 7 or so) through your mouth. Do not breathe rapidly or shallowly (in the chest area). This will soon restore the balance of oxygen and you will feel a lot better.

2. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy! CBT is proven to be the most effective thing for panic attacks, OCD and anxiety etc. It takes a bit of work, but it is super effective. (After 15 years of panic attacks, mine stopped completely). You can speak to your doctor about taking a course or you can take a course for free online at: www.livinglifetothefull.com

3. Try relaxation exercise tapes (progressive muscular relaxation). They really help if you practise often enough. You can get free downloads in you put "progressive muscle relaxation" into Google (e.g. lots of universities have them as free downloads)

With each step practise makes perfect. (i.e. practise the steps every day, not just when you are feeling bad). I hope you feel better soon. Best of luck!
Im not a doctor, but I work closely with clients with similar issues. There could be a multitude of variables effecting the reaction your medication is giving you. Are you taking other meds that could be inhibiting the reaction of Zoloft? Your dosage may not be high enough seeing that 25 mg is on the lower end of dosage quantities, you may be in need of a combination therapy, or maybe even a change to Wellbutrin, or Depacote. Consult a physician if your unstability persists, and no matter how much you think your meds are not effecting you, NEVER NEVER NEVER stop taking them without your doctor's consent. Anxiety attacks with come and go, the goal of your medication is to try to keep that down to a minimum, there is no guarantee that they will go away all together.
I used to have horrible attacks- symptoms are losing temper, violent rage, sweating, heart racing, palm sweating, crying or angry (or both) feeling like you are going to die or want to die.
Afterwords I used to have headaches and be exhausted.

You might ask about Lexapro- it is a non narcotic, no side effects and is mild. I didn't notice a difference when I was on it but my husband said I wasn't so psycho haha!
I have overcome the anxiety now after reading a book that was referred to me- I still lose my temper and have low tolerance but the anxiety itself isn't so severe and crippling.

in life we have 2 emotions we react upon, LOVE and FEAR-
For example- jealousy is a fear of losing or fear of never having, - Anger can be Fear or love, fear of being misunderstood, not heard- or fear of loving someone so much etc...

Try to keep things simple treat yourself every night to something, a movie, any thing that you enjoy- escape an hour from the real world- something soothing to the mind.

Hugs to you
