Oxygen level?

Question:
I am on oxygen because my sats were too low in my blood. Can I raise the dosage of oxyen withour it hurting me?

Answers:
No! Only by orders of your doctor, especially depending on your condition. People with COPD get so CO2 overload (so to say) that they become dependant on the amount of oxygen in their body to trigger breathing mechanisms. If you give yourself too much oxygen you can actually cancel out those mechanisms and stop breathing.
It is recommended to follow the directions of your doctor first of all. Best not to raise the oxygen unless it is absolutely necessary. For the simple reason that you become more dependent on it. ONLY if it is absolutely necessary! Then you should still consult your doctor or visiting nurse which ever is more appropriate.
No, you must not touch any of these settings. Have a dr's appointment and dr. will assess if nd to change level of oxygen you should use and then only the company that you get the oxygen from can do this.

The first answer you were given was inaccurate. You cannot become dependent on oxygen by increasing it. It is not a drug. You did not give enough information. Do you have copd? If so you should not turn it up yourself. How often do you have your sats checked? Are they checked before and after exercise? Call your doctor and ask these questions and try not to rely on the answers on this website. ( I am a registered nurse)
