What Was Going On?

Question:
When I was around 10 I started to wake up in the middle of the night and (obviously) had to pee. For some reason I couldn't move my legs at all every time. They hurt like hell when I did. I'm 13 now, and to this day wonder what the hell was going on and why I didn't tell anyone. Any ideas?

Answers:
During REM (rapid eye movement) sleep, which is the time when you dream, your brain causes your body to be paralyzed, preventing you from injuring yourself while you're dreaming. Sometimes, if you wake up when you're still in the REM stage of sleep, it might take your body a few seconds to a few minutes to catch up and de-paralyze you. Given that it's been three years and you haven't had any recurrence or worsening, that's probably what you had. It's perfectly normal and happens to a lot of people.

Just wait until you have hypnogogic hallucinations...which is the exact same thing, plus you're still dreaming, and usually it's a scary dream, like a monster coming at you, and you're still paralyzed. Horrible! But if it happens, don't freak out, it's totally normal.
