Any parent out there with a young child who has urinary reflux, what antibiotic, is surgery the best choice?
Question:
Answers:
My little one has the same condition, it is very hard to decide what is best since their is not a lot of info out their.
As far as antibiotics go, every child is different so they are going to react to antibiotics differently. If you are having side effects with one, I would go back to your doctor and try another. Also you may want to consider switching if their are breakthrough UTIs since that antibiotic does not work effectively for your child.
As far as surgery goes, it depends on your age or situation. Often if it diagnosed in kids who are getting closer to school and it does not show signs of improving then surgery might be the answer. If you child is still a baby or todder, I would wait and see if it shows signs of improvement after a year or so, or see the severity of the UTIs.
Reflux in its self is not a life threatning condition, why it is so closey watched and treated is because infections in the Urinary Tract and bladder can so easily go up to the kidneys and casue damage.
Also if surgery is suggested I would always get a second opinion for this or any other conditions. Having a child go through surgery is not something that needs to be done unless absolutely necessary and what one doctor thinks is necessary another doctor may want to wait or have alternatives.
I had it at the age of 11 and had to have a bladder augmentation. At 22 it started again and I found out that I had a blockage in my ureter. I have never heard of an antibiotic changing reflux. I have only heard of surgery being used.
