A rise in White Blood Cells can be due to either an infection, severe emotional stress, tissue damage or chronic bone marrow disease. I don't believe a neurologist will be able to do anything about it because it's not your nerves causing the problem in the first place. (that's what I think) If you were my kid, I would be taking you to a different doctor, getting a second opinion and I would be researching this topic until I found the right answer.
Yes, this can be very serious as a High white blood cell count has been linked to death -- Something is happening but we can't answer what it is. Good Luck little one.
I'm sorry, that sounds pretty scary. I don't really think you should be looking for answers here. You're going to get a bunch of answers and it will only freak you out more. It's tough having to wait to find out what the doctor has to say, so try to keep your mind busy by doing something you like that is not too strenuous like watching tv, playing a video game, or reading. I wish you well...
I agree there is a huge range of things that these symptoms. Yet not one of them be one you have. Many are not serious some are so it is really hard to get a good answer on here that as said will not freak you out.
I am almost Positive that if in fact there was anything that is seriously wrong they would have sent you to the Hospital to have more tests right then and there, and not refer you to a neurologist.
If this is however really bothering you speak to your parents let them know that there are new things going on, and that you are worried. They may be able to take you back to the doctor who can then decide on other tests or seeing if the Neurologist can speed up your appointment.
Good Luck
Hey, I may know why...
This will be a long answer, but you could have Fifth Disease...it is NOTHING to be worried about, and will eventually go away on its own if it is.
It is very common in smaller children (ages 2 - 7) and appears on them as red marks on their face (as though they were slapped really hard on both cheeks), and it also sometimes appears all over their body as a flat (not raised at all) rash that looks like a dark pink lace fabric on the skin. I mention the symptoms for a small child so you could possibly know if you've been in contact with any children that have had these symptoms.
It is called Fifth Disease because it was diagnosed as the fifth common childhood illness (chicken pox, measles, mumps, cant remember the 4th one, and then fifth disease). It is viral and needs to make its way through your system. Once you have it, you are immune for life and will never get it again.
The adult version of the virus is VERY different from the childhood form. Since you are 14, you may be experiencing the adult version. I am 36 and came down with the adult version about 5 years ago when it was going through my daughters' schools. Both of my girls came down with it, and I didn't think anything of it because the dr said it was a "childhood illness, adults don't get it". He was very wrong.
About a week after my girls' symptoms went away...
My symptoms began with small red dots all over my shins. They didn't hurt or itch at all, so I thought it was just a heat rash. I was also REALLY tired. I don't recall if I had twitches, as it was quite some time ago. About 2 days later, I woke up with a really stiff neck and back and just thought I slept bad. About 2 days after that, I had arthristis in all of my joints and could barely move. i was in horrible pain and went to see the dr. He told me that it was probably just viral and not to worry about it, but he put me on Prednisone. A week later I was still so stiff that I could barely move. It was so painful I thought I had MS or something similar. I thought it was going to kill me.
The dr couldn't give me any answers, so I researched it online and found out that you CAN get an adult version of fifth disease and it is nothing like the child's version. After 2 weeks, I started slowly getting better a little at a time, being able to move a little bit more every day. What I read said that the virus is caused by coming in contact with "Parvovirus B19". I asked the dr if he could check in a bloodtest if I had Parvovirus B19 in my system at that time. He said that it was a simple bloodtest and ordered it. It came back positive and I had my answer.
It took me about 6 months from the time that it started until all symptoms were completely gone from my system. This is little comfort if you do have it, I know. But it's very easy to check for and at least you'll know. It's also good to know that it's nothing that is very serious to you, and will not cause any long term effects. HOWEVER, if it is fifth, you need to stay away from any pregnant women that haven't had it, as it has been known to cause miscarriages in adult women.
Good luck with everything. I pray that you'll at least get an answer soon to find out what it is. Take care.
