You can live many many years with COPD as long as it is medically mmanaged very closely.

Of course continueing to smoke does complicate things. Not everyone can quit smoking. It is such a never ending battle and not all people can make that choice.

It really depends on each person.

My Mom lived with it for 11 years after she was diagnosed. And she smoked for those last 11 years too.

I would say though that if he wants to live longer, he better stop smoking.

Depends on what stage he's in. The still smoking part is really going to shorten his life at this point.

Is fasing blood sugar levels between 120 to 130 in danger zone?

It depends on the person. Once he can't breath any longer with his inhaler, maybe he will quit. However, the next step would be an oxygen tank. Cigarette smoking is very addictive and hard to quit. He might think it is to late to quit and therefor won't stop. If he would stop smoking now and would to daily exercises it sure would help with his breathing problems.

Does this sound infected?

My father is 62. He was diagnosed with COPD 4 years ago. He has been on oxygen for the last 3 years. Only the good Lord knows how long each person has on this Earth. I once asked our doctor how long my father had, and he replied that it depends on the person. My father has 15% of his lung function left, has home O2 set at Level 3 1/2 when at rest, Level 5 when he is on the move, which is rare. It is a long process, there is nothing that can reverse the desease - the only thing you can do is keep it from getting worse by stopping smoking. It is your husband's choice on whether or not to stop smoking, but after my father was diagnosed on it, I made him walk outside to smoke. The walking, hacking, and wheezing in between puffs was enough to make him give it up. Try it - put your foot down and tell him to get his butt outside to smoke his butt. Refuse to support his habit if he asks you to purchase him a pack of smokes, and be aware and make him aware that, second hand smoke causes COPD also, especially if there are children in the house with you. Good luck and you are in my prayers.
