Need Info. about Groin Hernia's on a 5 yr. old boy, Can anyone help?

Question:
Doctors told us at first the bulge was a lymph node swollen probably from insect bites and we were given Zyrtec for it. Week and a half later the bulge is bigger and causing increasing discomfort. Second opinion diagnosed groin hernia on my 5 yr.old grandson. Surgeon will be coming to our small town in 6 days. But what I want to know now is how risky is this on a small boy? Should we give him a stool softener to ease straining? Can this be repaired Lapriscopicly(unsure of spelling)??Will growth of the boy cause the weak area of the abdominal to become weaker? Will this affect any prospects of sports?

Answers:
Don't worry to much if it is a hernia. My son was born with one and I thought wow he sure seemed to big at first. So at 6mo they operated and found he had bilateral hernias, one on both sides. He is now 16, doing fine and plays sports. My advice is to have it fixed now while he's young and yes stool softeners will hep him till he has the surgerey, if it is a issue for him.
Good luck
