Ms . Smith complains that she is having difficulty falling asleep at night. This has been occurring more frequently over the past year. She says. "I am so tired in the mornings, I can hardly get out of bed"

1)from what sleep disorder is Ms. Smith Suffering?
2)What assessement tool might be used to determine her problem?
3)What options are available to help Ms. Smith
4)What will Ms. Smith report if the interventions are successful?

Answers:
1. Sounds like insomnia (can't sleep) and possibly other sleep disorders.

2. A good assessment tool is the Epworth sleepiness scale,

3. First she need to have her nightly habits evaluated. If she is drinking a lot of soda/coffee/tea late in the evening or is working out close to bed time, it may effect her sleep. Sh can try to adjust her habits to see if that helps.

She can try a sleeping pill (Benadryl, Ambian, Lunesta) and see if that helps.

4. If the sleeping pill works, she will report falling asleep easier at night, waking up better rested in the morning and less periods of drowsiness during the day.

If it doesn't cure the symptoms a sleep study may need to be done.
