Diverticulitis-what foods should one stay away from, eat in moderation or eat more of when they have this?
Question:

When you actually have acute diverticulitis, it means inflammation so you need a very bland and low fiber diet so it can heal. However if the diverticulitis is healed, then what remains is a diverticulum which is an outpouch in the intestine. So after the healing you need high fiber foods like bran cereal, fresh fruits and vegetables, beans.
Also you can add fiber to your food, like Benafiber or metamucil. Its best to stay away from small seeds and nuts as these can become trapped in the outpouches and become infected, thus coming to be diverticulitis. You want to avoid constipation at all costs and drink 8-10 glasses of water daily. Good luck, hope this helps.
avoid spicy foods that aggrivates it.
Anything with seeds. Especially tomatoes. Those little seeds can cause you MAJOR discomfort.
If you have this condition, you should try to eat a high fiber diet. Much like the one found at the following website:
http://www.med.umich.edu/1libr/aha/aha_d... You should stay away from foods that have seeds in them or don't digest real well, like peanuts. These foods can get trapped in the diverticuli and cause diverticulitis , which is an inflammation or infection of the pockets. Hope this helps some!
I have come to realize that putting dried hot pepper on my pizza seems to set the stage for an attack.it's a clear pattern, so I've stopped doing that altogether. I have experienced an attack and was hospitalized for four days. Been lucky so far with only a few minor attacks related to the above pizza issue.
