Here's the general rule of thumb I follow: Keep the carbs and sugars to a minimum. Eat lots of vegetables. Limit the meats to fish and chicken. Avoid beef and dairy. On the carbs you do eat, make sure they're made with whole grains.
Type 1 diabetics do not produce insulin which allows our bodies to use glucose found in sugars and carbohydrates to fuel our bodies. They have extremely high, deadly blood sugar levels w/out insulin injections and must be very careful on how many carbohydrates and sugars they ingest.
Type 2 are insulin resistant or just don't produce enough insulin and have the same problem just not as deadly.
Try the diabetes association websites for guidelines and help, but basically you have to cut down on carbs and sugars.
my husband has been type 2 diabetic for 10 yrs. we have found that the glycemic index is a very useful tool. try to eat foods that have complex carbs----whole wheat, avoid potatoes, most cereals--eat veggies, fruits, lean meats. go to american diab. assoc. page---ther is lots of info there----good luck!
A diabetic diet can be found on the Internet.
Eat NO sugar, especially soda, fruit juice, cookies and candy.
Eat whole grain bread and cereal.
A diabetic must limit their carb intake as well as calories so it is hard to come up with an example. A lot of it will go back to the dietician who is helping set up your limits. That is someone you need to talk to. Each person will have different daily limits according to their needs. Mine is based on weight loss and my like and dislikes in the food area. Talk to a certified diabetic dietician and they can help.
