My son who is 2 years old has Down Syndrome....?
Question:
Has anyone gone through this and is it his teeth?
Answers:
hi...my son did this as well when he is teething and at times will do it when he is tired...it is a comfort thing. he is probably still getting a lot of his teeth in.it seems kids with DS are a bit slower getting their teeth in than a "typical" child. what I did with my son was give him his favorite fruit (bananas) frozen and it helped with the teething...since he does not like anything sweet... popcycles were out with him... or you could get one of the teething rings and stick it in the freezer for a bit.
is it because he has down syndrome...or are you sudgesting he has down syndrome because of this...
I wonder if his teeth are bothering him or (this may sound stupid) maybe he needs to have his tonsils removed if they are swollen? He might have trouble getting across to you what is bothering him.
I have special needs child also. If it keeps up bring him to his pediatrician to see if they can figure out what is wrong.
It could be a teething issue...have you taken him to see a pediatric dentist yet? My son has DS and is almost 3 and when his teeth were coming in, he would put his fingers in his mouth...particularly when the back molars were coming in.
Also, it could be a sensory issue. As you probably know, children with DS can have sensory delays and it is normal for them to explore with sensory type activities. This may be comforting to him.
I would consult with his pediatrician and if you haven't already got one, ask for a recommendation for a pediatric dentist who has experience with children with special needs.
Good luck!
