Are we educated enough about health?
Question:
Answers:
Well - not to put the blame on anyone person,
NO we are not trying to learn more and I mean the correct thing. Where I work now Family members dictate to the doctors as to what meds their loved ones get. Insurance companies tell the doctors what meds the people will get because the insurance won't pay otherwise. Then if one doctor says something about a medication the Family member flip out out because things have to be like what that other doc says, when he doesn't know what is going on. Thirty - forty
years ago when you would do a question-air with a patient half of them wouldn't know what medications they were on because they were told to take them - so they did. So many people are afraid to read a book to learn, all they think about is it says so on the Internet so it has to be true. The medical profession has too many people trying to be chiefs and not enough Indians. Stop the insanity!
NO! It's partly our fault and partly the fault of the so-called medical community. The medical community wants us to stay dumb" about all aspects of health, from insurance to brain surgery. The dumber we are about health, the more power we give to those running the field of healthcare. As for it being our fault, we Americans choose not to be bothered learning about any aspect of healthcare because we are lazy and figure that that's what the doctors, etc., are for.
I think there is room for all of us to learn more about health, but the information is is available to anyone who seeks it. The internet puts the world's experts at our fingertips. Book stores and libraries are chock full information. Even television has all kinds of exercise, diet, emotional, spiritual info and physical health information. The radio too. Hospitals, school, state and federal government have programs for educating anyone anywhere on a wide variety of health topics. If one is uneducated about health, then they choose to be.
Well, for non-medical people, Yes. Today, people are instructed to carry an ID bracelet for certain disorders ( Diabetes, Epilepsy, or any severe allergies that a person may have, to name a few). In addition, people are encouraged to carry with them, a list of their medications so if there should be the possibility of drug interactions. Most people are better informed or seek information via the web. This, obviously, was not available years ago. People are doing alot of research on their own so that they have a better understanding of their diseases, conditions, etc. Patients' are instructed to make a list of questions for their Doc's prior to an appt. with their Doc. But, the healthcare industry is always changing. There are so many advances in medicine and technology that even medical professionals' can have a hard time in keeping on top of the latest break-throughs, advances, etc. I hope that this helps.
