Diabetes or bad dinner?

Question:
I'm 16 years old and very overweight. I don't exercise often and my eating habits are horrendous. I realize this is my fault, but I do wish my parents instilled better habits while raising me. Anyway, I've been urinating rather frequently lately. I'll often have the urge to urinate, but once I get to the bathroom, the urge essentially diminishes. About an hour ago, I grew very thirsty. I also find myself waking up with an uncontrollable need to drink something. At first, I thought it was because I've been sleeping with my mouth open the past two weeks (a recent quirk I just started doing). I haven't really experienced this need to drink before, so I'm wondering if it has anything to do with what I ate tonight (pizza and pepsi), or if I may have diabetes. It runs in my family, so I was tested in 2001, but the results were negative. Do you think the current inability is due to what I ate/drank tonight or something else?

Answers:
Go your doctor first. he will send you for the proper tests but it does not consist only with the A!C.

You seem to have the classic symptoms of family history thirst , urination and weighing too much.

No one is on this board can properly diagnose you. That may only be done with tests that the doctor orders.

Do not blame your parents. You are old enough and mature enough to know what to do. You hinted that at least one of your parents are diabetic. They should know what to do also, although they may not be doing it.

You have a long life ahead of you. Let's keep it long without the complications.

I have been a diabetic for at least ten years. I take my medications, see my doctors (there are many in order to avoid complications) and am doing well. You can lead a rich and fulfilling life with diabetes or you can have a short miserable one. To a great extant the choice is yours.

Good luck.
I'm sorry to say, but it sounds like diabetes. Go to Walmart and get an Accucheck (glucose checker) and test yourself. It comes with some test strips to get you started. Read in the instructions. I found out I had it when I went an entire week suuuuuuuuppppppper thirsty and getting up all night to pee. I knew after one week. I runs in my family too. If you do have it, take it serious because there are complications later in life. Drink lots of water, that helps to push the sugar out of your body. ALso, eat protein with carbs, that helps absorb the sugar and your body doesn't absorb as much sugar. Good luck!
Given your description and family history I would highly suspect diabetes and your high carb, fat & sugary laden meal quite possibly pushed your blood glucose level through the roof.

Regarding the sleeping with your mouth open - this is probably caused by sleep apnea due to your weight issues and can also be a huge risk factor for heart disease.

Talk to your parents about your concerns and ask them to take you to the doctor as soon as possible. Be upfront with the doctor about all of the symptoms you're experiencing and understand that you don't need a diabetes diet, you need a complete change of lifestyle and this won't happen overnight so don't be discouraged!
yOU'VE PROBABLY BECOME DIABETIC ! With your history why wouldnt you take care of your health? Do you want to have heart trouble, not be able to drive if you go blind, not be able to see the worlds great wonders if you go blind, risk death if you become pregnant, not live to raise your children ????
Get on a diet and exercise plan today! Call Jenny or Nutrasystem and get the plan for DIABETICS ! Get a blood sugar tester at WM and make an appt with the health dept or your doctor and have an A1C test done -- this will show if youre diabetic and how bad, and they'll put you on meds.
Ask for ACTOS, I found it works best for me (it's not insulin -- stay away from insulin unless you must have it as once you start insulin your body will probably completely stop making it & actos works differently!) . I was nearly hospitalized from the bad reaction I had to GLIPIZIDE and METFORMIN was almost as bad -- but many people tolerate those drugs just fine, but if you dont, stop taking htem immediately, call your doctor and ask fro ACTOS (hopefully they'll start you on ACTOS ! Best Wishes & DO NOT WASTE ONE MORE SECOND -- AS YOU COULD BE DAMAGING YOUR HEART EVERY MOMENT YOU ARENT UNDER CARE !!!

It is a long time since2001 when you were last tested. Yours is a sure case of diabetes. Go get tested and consult and Endocrinologist with out further loss of time.
