I'm a diabetic on a insulin pump and my tubing is blocked.I can't get new tubing until tomorrow morning

Question:
I have short acting insulin and a needle with me. My blood sugars are are staying low at the moment. I haven't given myself any insulin for 3 hours. What should I do? And my doctors aren't helping cause it's Saturday

Answers:
When my pump died and I was waiting for the replacement to come, my endo had me inject my fast acting in the amount I would normally get every two hours... Like, if your setting is for 1/2 unit per hour, then you'd inject 1 unit every two hours. Bolus like you used to while on MDI, for food.

The real kink in the plan is going high overnight. Either deal with it, or set your alarm for every two hours. However, one night of highs is probably going to make your morning bad, so I don't suggest "dealing with it"...

Test a lot, as well. This way you can make slight corrections, if needed.
Call your local pharmacist, they can give you some ideas on how to raise your blood sugar in a healthy way.
You could check your sugars and administer insulin the old way, i.e. subcutaneously with a syringe if you have the necessary material and patient-training. Your doctor should have coverage over the weekend for situations like this. Did you look into his/her coverage situation? Otherwise, your options would include visiting your local urgent care clinic.
Are you away from home,on vacation etc? Do you have your glucose monitor? If you are away from home or don't have your glucose testing supplies,go to the nearest ER for treatment. You can't wait until you are in a crisis. Someone HAS to take call for your MD on weekends. The ER staff will be able to reach him. Take care. SW RNP
keep checking your blood sugars frequently and if they start to raise then keep giving youself a few units of insulin to keep them at a low level.
as its just for one night dont worry too much about being high during the night as you can correct it i the morning
I find it hard to believe that you don't have extra set up and you do not have a protocol for days without the pump.

Your doctor is either on call or has someone on call for him/her.

i would monitor my sugars very well until then,if the pump is blocked and it gets too high i would take a small amount of insulin.i am not a doctor, just what i would do.
Regardless of what day of the week it is, you shoul be able to contact your doctor. Call his office and the answering service should pick up. When they do, explain what's going on and tell them it's urgent that the doctor contacts you. Make sure you leave a number where you can be reached. The answering service will page the doctor and ask him to contact you.

As for now, take shots of short acting insulin as you would on your scale (however many units of insulin for however many number of carbs). Keep careful track of your blood sugar. Get to a pharmacy and ask for some insulin syringes. Make sure you have plenty of insulin.

This happened to me once. I was away from home, but fortunately just for the day. I had to remove the infusion set and use shots until I got home and put in a new set. This was a lesson learned for me. I never left home again for more than a few hours without an extra infusion set, the inserter and insulin.

While I was able to maintain decent control, I did run a little high (upper 100s) until I was able to replace my infusion set. I checked my sugar every hour and made sure I was getting plenty of fluids.

Don't let this happen again. Have a small kit with an extra set and everything you need to insert it with you and take it with you. Sets can become clogged, be pulled out and on down the line. Just be prepared.

You should have some fast acting insulin on hand to inject if ever you have a problem like this.
