Neurontin and muscle cramps Multiple Sclerosis?
Question:
P.S. The only thing I have found to help has been marijuanna. I would preffer to not take that as it is illegal in MN. Do I have hope with Neurontin? ...I told my Dr. that pot helped so I could sleep and he gave me the thumbs up. Very strange!
Answers:
My doctor recently put me on TEGERTOL for muscle cramps. It has been amazing. not only has the leg cramps gone, but the muscles spasims in my back, and I'm not running to the bathroom every five minutes. I haven't noticed any side effects, such as drowsiness or the effects marijauna gives. I was seriously considering marijauna myself, but I have a mimor child at home. Ask your doctor about this drug. I have been taking the drug 3 months now.
Check out your drugs on the internet before you take them. I was once given Neurotin (for something many years ago) and I as I recall it was a anti-seziure drug. I could be mistaken, but find a source such as webmd to check it out.
There are studies being done on the effects of marijuana on ms. That's probably why your doctor gave you the thumbs up. Legally he can't tell you to smoke it.
My doctor also gave me Neurontin for pain that my MS caused. It did absolutely nothing. I was still in agony. Pot works better than anything else. Most of my friends who were given Neurontin for their pain said it did nothing for them. Neurontin was not formulated to relieve pain. It is a mood stabilizer and it doesn't do much to stabilize a person's mood either. The drug company that manufactured it marketed it as pain reliever as well as a mood stabilizer although the FDA did not approve it as a pain reliever. As a consequence they were fined millions by the US government. The drug appears to be ineffectual whether it is prescribed for its intended use of some other use. Regardless, doctors prescribe it anyway. But then doctors know almost nothing about pharmacology.
Never smoked Pot so can't answer to that. But I was on neurnotin for several years and it worked great, but my doc had to keep upping the dose. When he retired and I had to get a new Neuro he suggested switching to Lyrica (sp). I was nervous since the neurontin was working so good, but I was taking A LOT! Lyrica is great and I only had to take one 50mg a day at first. That was a few years ago, now I'm up to 2 a day. I have no pain with it or spasms. If I don't take it I can't keep myself still or sleep.
