A blood test revealed possible Diabetes... could it be the candy?

Question:
My blood was drawn at 4:oopm and I hadn't eaten anything other than sugary, creamy coffee all day (about 4 cups). When I got to the Dr. office I was starving so I raided their candy jar and ate appx. 10-12 pieces of hard candy in the hour before my blood was drawn. My blood sugar was 154. The medical asst. thought that the candy would not have caused such a result. Any thoughts? I am going in for a glucose tolerance test this week to confirm. But could that candy and coffee cause a 154 glucose result?

Answers:
I am not sure what the normal levels are in the States
in Canada we go by a different system

But if someone is healthy their sugar levels should not go up
beyond what is normal.

If you are healthy your body would just handle it.

There are those out there who say you are not diabetic if you can be controlled by diet

It is like saying you are a little bit pregnant

either you are or you are not

It is estimated that there are millions out there with diabetes and they do not know it.

So if your sugars are up
the next step is a glucose tolerance test.
it will take several hours
you go in the morning fasting
and they take blood and then they give you stuff to drink
they should than take blood again
in 1/2hour
1 hour
2 hour
3 hour

In Canada they are now calling people who have
sugars that are higher than normal but not high enough
to be called diabetic
pre-diabetic
it has been proved that if these people
look after themselves and eat /exercise right they never develop full blown diabetes
that would definitely put it up =you are not to have any sugar before a sugar test
Often when a diabetics sugar drops, they are instructed to eat candy or drink orange juice. So will it raise your sugar? Yes, but an hour is a pretty long time, by then your own bodies insulin should have kicked in to regulate your blood sugar. Get the test done for a more accurate diagnosis. The doctor can also perform a blood test (called an A1-C I think) in which it will give an average of what your blood sugar has been over the past 3 months.
Not really. Your Pancreas secretes Insulin which controls your blood sugar levels so even if you ate all the candy before the test your body would have regulated it. My brother has diabetes and was first diagnosed when he was 14 he is 31 now. Regular life for him. Some symptoms for diabetes are constant thirst, fatigue and the need to go do number 1 quite regularly, mainly due to all the water you consume. Well thats how it happened for my brother. Hope all turns out ok. If not don't sweat, like i said you have can have a normal life.
The candy, No, but the sweeten coffee is possible.
Why would you drink or eat any sweets before taking a blood sugar test anyways?
The glucose tolerance test show the different levels that your body is absorbing sugar. The first blood drawn will be before you drink a highly sweeten drink; all the others will monitor the amount/speed of sugar into your system.
yes it is the candy fasting blood sugar means that nothing! the candy was eaten before the blood test did you tell the technician how many peices you actually had? I can have a cup of coffee and toast and mine was 179 but the fasting bs and the one where you eat and go in 2 hours later came out fine. but I can take my blood sugar on any given day and it is never under 140 so I know I need to find a doctor that will do further testing I have a history of my bs dropping to below 50 in the past then gestational diabetes with a family history. please do as follows because it is nothing to play around with my dad takes 2 insulin shots daily.
No way. You might have type2 diabetes caused by your pancreas not working properly. Too much detail to go into hear but your Dr. will check it out
No candy sugars or anything that's sweet does not cause Diabetes. If sugar and sweets alone caused Diabetes 99.9% of the world's population would have Diabetes.
Candy and coffee can definitely increase your blood sugar to 154...Hence the result is not a good gauge if you have diabetes...But, if your blood sugar after eating candies reached 200 and you have signs and symptoms of diabetes, the probability of you having the condition is more likely. For normal individuals it should be below 200 as a pancreas will able to compensate by secreting insulin after a meal.
It's unlikely- because candy is usually pure carbohydrate, your blood sugar would have risen almost immediately and fallen pretty fast as well, so the 154 is a pretty "true" reading. A non diabetic could have eaten the candy without a signficant rise, anywhere near the 154 range.
Yes, the candy could have caused your blood glucose to be elevated, especially if you ate that much. Why do you have such a poor diet? There's no reason not to at least have some nutritious snacks during the day, rather than sipping on junk all day. I hope you can rethink the way you're treating your body. Even if you do have diabetes, it's sometimes possible to control the disease with a healthy diet. Maybe this is a wake-up call for you!!
Short and sweet......Yes my dear ...it will.

You did not have a fasting blood sugar. I don't think 154 is bad. I am a diabetic on insulin, and if I atr candy like you did I'd probably be over 200 or more. Carbos and protein and everything you eat has an effect on your blood sugar.I have had several GTT"S,and they will confirm whether or not you may have diabetes. Also it is not a good idea to be hungary because you have not eaten. 5or 6 small meals is better than 2 or 3 large ones. Good Luck.
