Drinking alcohol?
Question:
I was wondering if it is true that when you are drunk it is similar to feeling low... any thoughts?? Thanks!
Answers:
I guess in a way it is. You feel kind of disoriented and can't concentrate on anything. But drinking doesn't make me shake or get hot and sweaty like low blood sugar usually does. Alcohol does make your blood sugar harder to control though and you could end up with actual low glucose levels.
So my thoughts, be careful. If you decide to get drunk make sure you are with people that under stand your condition and take your blood sugar.
I get low blood sugar from time to time, and feel sick to my stomach and weak and clammy all over,
I have been drunk too, and some of those symptoms apply, but usually there is spinning effect to it as well. Often, by the time you realize that you are drunk, you have already consumed enough to be really drunk, but it hasn't made it through the system yet.
I would strongly advise you against drinking at all if you are diabetic. All alcoholic beverages consist of or can be broken down into sugar by your system. A little dab could do you in before you even realized the damage.
You have to watch yourself very closely when drinking and being Diabetic. If you're a beer drinker, it can actually lower your blood sugar. Mixed drinks are usually filled with sugar and carbs. I like drinking Rum and Diet Coke. No sugar, no carbs no nothing! Just be sure to eat before and during drinking and test your blood sugar every few hours. Be careful!!
I know this man who is diabetic. As a matter of fact had a stroke because of it (I think) and he drinks a fifth of alcohol almost every day, sometimes to the point of being inebriated. He says it is very good for his diabetes. He does the test at least once a day. I am always amazed at this.
