Question:
Answers:
Yes, I've been a vegetarian for the past year, and have gone from 4 insulin shots a day for my diabetes to no diabetes meds at all. You can do a vegetarian diet easily.
There are ways to get protein in a vegetarian diet. Beans and tofu come immediately to mind.
The best thing you could do is try it and monitor your blood sugar like crazy for awhile.
lots of vegetables have protein
certain beans
peanut butter
speak with you dr. or do a search on the web to find out what you need
hypoglycemia could be not enough carbs consumed in relation to your medication dosage
speak to your doctor to see if the dosage is too high for you
because you are on one dose does not mean it stays the same forever nor does it mean the meds can't change either adding or deleting some
try to write down when it happens
what you had eaten and what you were doing at the time to show the doctor
you might be referred to a registered dietician to help you work out the best diet for you
make sure you have your FBS and A1C checked on a regular schedule even if you are using a glucometer
My sister in law has been diabetic since childhood (type 1) and has been not only vegetarian, but a strict vegan all of her adult life due to religious reasons. Her blood sugar is in very tight control. In fact, she was one of the original people ever to be given the insulin pump and was chosen for her excellent sugar control. It's just a matter of finding a balance and being willing to stick to a strict code when it comes to food. Plus, what everyone else said here. there are so many protein sources that don't have anything to do with meat.
I'm type 2 diabetic also,a vegetarian diet is something that I have been thinking about also. there are lots of foods you can eat that have protein, beans, nuts are just a few. One of the sites that I have been using is listed below.
