Answers:
some strains of HPV do cause genital warts, and it doesn't go away. Your friend may have been misdiagnosed. The warts will go away eventually, but come back at times. You should make sure to be seen at a clinic every year for a pap smear, since HPV has very strong links to cervial cancer. Try planned parenthood, which is a cheaper alternative. also, keep in mind you now have an STD and ALWAYS use protection, for your sake and others. OTC meds may help aleviate symptoms, but will not get rid of the warts.
Ok. Yes most strains of HPV DO cause genital warts inside and outside the vagina and anus. Also, some strains go on to not only cause warts, but they can cause cervical cancer. And YES, most strains DO GO AWAY ON THEIR OWN! It just all depends on which strain of the virus you have. And it's transmitted from skin to skin contact meaning if you produce warts on any other part of your body, you can pass it on to others by touching them with the wart infected part of your body. ALL BODILY WARTS ARE A STRAIN OF THE HPV VIRUS. Ask ANY gynecologist.
There is no cure for the virus. They are over 30 HPV types that cause cell changes or warts in the genital area. Most people build immunity to there acquire HPV type but the virus still lays in the tissue that it has infected. Some people need treatments others will clear the manifestation that the virus creates without treatments. Genital warts most often do not clear in a few days...month’s maybe. Genital warts can regress, stay the same or persist.

A health immune system may help the body recognize HPV and start building immunity.

I am not sure what over the counter cream your friend purchase to remove the warts. I don't think most over the counter creams are recommend for the genital area.

If you don't have the money to see a doctor check with some of your local health clinic or check with planned parenthood.

Good luck to you.
