Some diuretics are potassium-sparing, so it is NOT a good idea to take extra potassium with them.
Furosemide is not like that, however. So it IS OK to increase potassium when using furosemide. Most docs will check blood levels of potassium when you're being treated with diuretics, because, as you seem to know, potassium is essential for proper heart function.
As to long term use of potassium, it's side effects would be more transient.
My advice is to get in with a different cardiologist ASAP. You need to see someone that you trust and can have a positive relationship with. You are clearly in need of help.
Also, cardiac patients are at high risk for depression, due to the rigourous demands and worries. It sounds like you might be headed down that road, too. Having a provider you trust could help with that.
i am indeed knowledgeable on this (i'm a physician)...which of course, does not mean that i can give out advice over the internet...you must see your own doc for that.
but what i can tell you is that potassium supplements will not cause you to have swelling. taking a lot of salt/sodium will definitely cause water retention. perhaps your doctors need to fine tune your diuretic and cardiac meds regimen. if you are not happy with your cardiologist, switch! its better to switch now rather than find out you were on the wrong meds for years.
