Cough that gets worse at night?

Question:
This is day number 5. I dont feel too bad during the day, I dont even cough that much. Im tired all day, though, probably from not sleeping at night. But the minute I lay down, I start coughing like crazy. Sometimes I cough up some yellow stuff, other times, just a dry cough. Im somewhat congested. I have no fever, and Ive been reading on the internet about bronchitis and such, and it seems like if its anything other than viral, I would have a fever. I hate going to the dr for them to tell me "Its just a virus/flu/cold" Anyone have any ideas how to get rid of the cough? The mucinex I had didnt work, and cough drops dont work. Could it been something that needs antibiotics, even if I dont have a fever?

Answers:
Yeah, I'm afraid I have to agree with the other answers here. A Dr. visit does seem in order. Although I understand your reason for being reluctant to go. It is frustrating to pay to see a doctor only to hear, "Keep doing what your doing. Drink lots of fluids and call us if things don't improve." Been through that many times. I am always reluctant to see a doctor now. If using an antihistamine (like Benadryl) doesn't help dry up that drainage at night, I would see a doctor. Also, it helps to prop your head and shoulders up with pillows as much as possible at night to reduce some of that drainage and ease coughing. Best of luck to you my friend. I hope you feel better soon.
oooo I was gonna tell you mucinex and the orange cough medicine that starts with a "D"...But if thats not working, you may need to call the doc cause it could be bronchitis or asthma. Both which gets worse at night and is not affected by any of this over the counter medicine. You will need a round of "the good" cough medicine to relax your lungs and give your body time to heal.
if your cough has been going on this long you should visit a doctor. if you dont wanna visit a doctor try rubetussin (if thats how u spell it) it always works for me.
It could be allergies too. You might want to try some of the over the counter allergy meds...
Drink Hot water only- Eat fresh items only- and take the doctor given prescribed medicine
i have a problem similar to yourself, although i have suffered this for nearly 1 year, the symptoms are very similar. at first i would only cough at night and it became really bad but now that i have left it too long b4 seeing the doctor, i now seem to be coughing day and night and it is constant and really annoying.
i would recommend that u do see your doctor as soon as possible
It's possible that it's a sinus infection, the drainage often gives you a nasty cough when you lay down to sleep. Especially if you're bringing up colored mucus-that can be a giveaway that it's a sinus infecton. They can be difficult to get rid of, I've had to take 3 courses of different antibiotics to finally get rid of one. Please do see a doctor, even if it's viral, he can help alleviate the symptoms, and rule out anything more serious. Your health is important!
It could still be bronchitis. If you aren't careful that can turn into walking pneumonia. I had the cough and stuff and was too bullheaded to got the doctor. Turns out I was about a day away from ending up in the hospital with walking pneumonia. It sounds like you have tried to take care of the problem yourself and that you may need something stronger than OTC medicines. You should go to the doctor to get it checked out. Five days is quite a while to be miserable and your health is important. I hope you get to feeling better soon!
