Can you be skinny and have diabetes?

Question:
im jus wondering. or do u have to be fat to have diabetes?

Answers:
No you don't have to be fat.

Obesity is often an early symptom of diabetes.

It has been discovered that the fat is in some cases deposited around the internal organs and not visually detectable.

While much research (as with most diseases) has gone into treating symptoms, which is a money maker, little research has gone into the causes of the disease. Rather, early conjecture persists to explain causes, and is constantly repeated without empirical evidence to support it. No different than saying it is caused by devils and daemons or toad wielding dwarfs.

Recent thinking is that the disease may be somehow communicable.
you can be any size
diabetes does not discriminate
Yep, diabetes is a genetic thing as well as a fat thing.
Yep, you can have type 1 diabetes.
You can be skinny and have diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is genetic and not caused by too much sugar in the diet.
There was a guy in my class. He was skinny and had diabetes. He was born with it though.
I wouldnt say its impossible not to get. However if youre hispanic or black and over weight you alot more likely to get it!
As a yoga therapist I get to teach people with different
types of disease. While majority of people suffering from
diabetes are obese I have seen two cases of diabetic
patient - one male and another female and both are skinny
and married with their respective spouses. The female
got diabetes due to the shock on the death of her father
and the male due to business stress - so there is no hard
and fast rule about only fat people are prone for diabetes.

People in my family have been thin all their lives, were active and exercised and still developed Type 2 diabetes in the their 50's and 60's.

A symptom of Type 1 diabetes is unexplained weight loss.

There is a correlation between being overweight and Type 2 diabetes, however CORRELATION does not imply CAUSE.
Definitely!
Type 1 diabetes is often diagnosed because the person (usually a child but it can happen at other ages too) is losing a lot of weight very quickly

I have also met type 2 diabetics who were skinny busy people who had strong genetic predisposition and one that only drank sugary cola all day and didn't eat anything ...I think he just wore out his insulin response

If you're passing a lot of urine, drinking all the time, feel really sluggish it would be wise to get a doctor to test you.

Hope you stay well and don't have it (c;
Yes anyone can have Diabetes my mom's not over weight and she has Diabetes.
Yes, it is possible.
I've been a type-1 for 29 years and the most I ever weighed was 160! When I was 9 mos pregnant! Yes there are skinny diabetics!
My husband is 5'8" and 155 lbs and he developed type 1.
Why is it that people think you have to be overweight to have diabetes?? That is simply not true. Being overweight can contribute to type 2 diabetes...in fact, it is a major cause of it...but there are other causes and there is more than one type of diabetes.

I'm type 1...that means I'm insulin dependent. I must take insulin in order to survive. I use an insulin pump. I am not overweight. I never have been. I'm slim, fit and healthy. I weigh about 140 pounds...a good, healthy weight for a muscular, 5'7" female. Most type 1s are like me...slim or even skinny.

Then there is gestational diabetes...it is caused by pregnancy. Now, not every pregnant women is going to get gestational diabetes. However, if a woman does develop it, it usually goes away after the birth of the baby. At the same time, it leaves the woman more likely to develop type 2 later in life.

With diabetes, there are no absolutes. It can happen to anyone at anytime for a variety of reasons.

Don't insult people who are overweight. They have enough to deal with as it is. There are many overweight people who do not have diabetes.

EMT
it is not just a type 1 or onset by poor diet and sedatarty life style. if it has run in your family (mom, dad, brother, grandparents) then you have a high risk for it because it does carry on in genetics
