Cholestrol question?

Question:
there is only 1 type of cholesterol, which one?

Answers:
According to my recent lipid panel, there are several. I used to think there were two, but the HDL and LDL are divided up into sub groups.
Actually there are many types of cholesterol

If you look at it roughly, there are 5 subtypes: LDL (Low density lipoprotein), HDL (High density lipoprotein), IDL (Intermidiate density lipoprotein), VLDL (Very low density lipoprotein), and Triglyceride. They are all different in function and risk of causing diseases.

However, for each of the above, you can have different subtypes. For example, you can have HDL-1, HDL-2, and HDL-3, with HDL-2 being very beneficial in preventing heart diseases and stroke, but HDL-3 does nothing for prevention. So someone who is high on HDL-3 and low on HDL-2 actually has higher chance of heart diseases.

There are plenty of information on internet about cholesterol. Go google and find out more details.
