I just tested my blood for diabetes?

Question:
It's 121!!!! Couple years ago it was 79.

So does this mean I have diabetes or that I will be getting it soon?

I am 5'9" 250 pounds and gained 40 pounds in the past 2 years. I am in mid 30s.

HELP!

Answers:
the only way to diagnosis someone with diabetes is to do a SERIES of glucose testing. this includes fasting blood sugar, then a 3 hour series where you drink a something high in glucose and then test your glucose reading at different times over the next few hours. this isn't something that you do at home, its done in a doctors office/hospital where they can test blood. 121 is not high. your blood sugar fluctuates though out the day, it never stays at one constant level, so the fact that a few years ago you said it was 79 means nothing. also depending on what you ate, how long ago you ate it, and even if you washed your hands before testing your sugar can all effect the way your results come back.

it does sound like you have a few risk factors for diabetes. your overall wight, the fact that you've gained 40lbs in 2 years. is there a family history? i would recommend that you make an appt with your primary care doctor and discuss any concerns you have. your doctor will most likely suggest you lose some weight, and may even refer you to a professional nutritionist if you would like.
the symptoms for diabetes are feeling thirsty and urinating more than usual

i don't think that 121 is bad
I completely agree with tootsie here,,,,, You have several risk fx. for Diabetes. If you have just od'd on oreo's it's going to be higher of course. If I remember correctly, several readings 126 or > Is indictative of Diabetes. I would highly suggest losing weight, and beging an excercise regimine. I'm sure you will see a difference in the way you look and feel.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with you. Normal blood sugar is between 80 and 120.

You are overweight and will get type 2 diabetes if you don't change your diet and start exercising.
I dare say being overweight and eating sugar both had something to do with it. That is not really a very high number for blood sugar after eating sweets. You need a fasting blood sugar done, more accurate or ask your doctor for a glucose tolerance test. If you will lose weight, you may stall developing diabetes for a while.
One glucose reading cannot diagnose you with diabetes.

You do however, seem to be on a road toward Type 2 diabetes, if you keep eating and gaining the way you described.

If you are still concerned that you may have diabetes, go to your doctor and ask that they do a hemoglobin A1C test. That will look at the average of your glucose over the past 3 months, and is a much better measure than one finger-stick.
the fingerstick test is indicative of your blood sugar at that point. it doesn't stay at 121 all the time and when it was 79 it wasn't 79 all the time. your blood sugar levels go up and down with what you eat, excercise, etc.
and 121 is a number all diabetics would looooove to see. 121 is perfectly normal.
you are fine... for now. however you have a few of the risk factors for type two. i definitely encourage you to lose some weight, and maybe get to the root of why you gained so much so fast.
maybe you have some depression or something to work out.
