I had a tonsilectomy my first year of middleschool. I would suggest getting it done on christmas or holiday break, it would put a damper on the holidays but hey, you might not miss any school either. i would say 2-3 weeks for recovery.
That's how long it took me :]
hey i got mine taken out in februrary and i only cried when i work out if anestesia and i stayed out of school for 2 weeks, but the school mailed me notes from classes and my work. u cant force him to eat because for about a week he wont eat any thing but he has to keep sipping liquid. after about 1/2 week he will start eating. no acidic stuff like orange juice. give him things like mashed potatoes, ice cream, sherbert, pudding, jello and ramen noodles.also tell him that the medicine will put him to sleep in like 5 miniutes and his ears will hurt.
if u have any more questions about this u can email me

It depends on how quickly your son recovers. Healing times differ from one person to the next but generally in 2 to 3 weeks. For his age, I'd venture to say 2 weeks barring complications. The younger they are the sooner they recover.
It has been suggested that the procedure be scheduled for December. I'd strongly advise against delaying it.
