What is the life expectancy?

Question:
What is the life expectancy for people who have diabetes (type 1). Assuming they take care of themselves and they are healthy. I have heard many different things.

Answers:
Nobody can give you an exact answer. Almost everyone lives for at least 20+ years after diagnosis, and sometimes many more. If kidney failure occurs it means that their life expectancy is about 15-20 years after that. Childhood type 1, previously called juvenile DM, is more devastating than the DM that starts later in life. But even with IDDM from early childhood, you have a chance to live a long time. Look at Mary Tyler Moore. She must be almost 75 now. She is still living. All you can do is take good care of your self. Watch for infections because sepsis is a major cause of death for childhood DM sufferers later in life. And enjoy your life. Don't dwell on the bad things. Enjoy the good things.
I think they have a regular life expectancy - provided as you said, that they take good care of themselves.
I've known people with type 1 to live into their 50s
idk but the life expectancy for america is 42. if you have diabetes, hmm well my grandmother had diabetes for a long time and well she's really sick. so if you are healthy, when you get older it tends to slip away.
If a person with diabetes takes care of themselves, follows the diet given to them by their physician, gets regular exercise etc. their life span does not suffer too much. But this also depends on the severity of the disease affecting the person, there are all different levels of the disease. Diabetes tends to wear out the body's organs faster than someone without the disease, this is usually the cause of death, rather than a diabetic coma or other complications such as gangrene to the extremities, etc. People have reversed diabetes with the proper diet, exercise, and supplements, but it takes a strict regimen to accomplish this feat, and cannot always be attained.
70 - 75
My mom has diabetes and she is almost 88 years old. The secret being to take care of yourself and do what you are suppose to. Eat healthy and take your meds. You want to keep your blood sugar readings as close to normal as possible to avoid kidney damage along with harming your eyes, etc. Diabetes does not have to be a death sentance. You do have to make some lifestyle changes. Hope this helps to ease your mind!
IDK, but as long as I have forgotten about you (due to old age) by the time you die, it's all good, otherwise, we could have 2 dead people. LOL :O
My mom is nearly 80 and Mary Tyler Moore has to be close to that... 70s at least. I have friends and family in their 50s-60s doing fine. I've also known people to die from it in their 30s. It all depends on whether you can be committed to taking care of yourself.
Things have changed!

In the past a diabetic wasn't expected to live long. In the past, we didn't know about carbohydrates (only sugar), we didn't have meters to test our own blood sugar, we didn't have fast working insulins or reliable background insulins. We were scared to exercise, and we avoided lows, but not highs.

Now we have the knowledge and the tools. Anyone with both those things, plus a little support, is able to live as long as they want to!

Diabetics still have risks of complications, even with very good control - but most complications can be avoided (even reversed!) with tight control, and good awareness of what their body is doing.

I see no reason why a diabetic can't live to be over 100 these days!
you can live a normal healthy life if you eat right and exercise and take your prescribed meds check your blood sugar and check it often
my dad had type 2 and died 2 days before his 78th b day
just take care of yourself and exercise. and when your feet start getting numb you can save them from being amputated by using strong magnets. ( not the ones you put on you fridge.) it keeps the circulation going
If you keep your sugar as close to normal as possible. Im sure it would be close to same as someone who does not have diabeties.
