Protection from urinary tract infections?
Question:
Also, is it true that some UTIs can be caught while swimming in the pool? I was told this, but don't know whether it is true or not.
Answers:
Drink cranberry juice and lots of water.
Wipe from front to back.
Urinate when she feel the urge (don't let her hold it). Frequent urination.
Limit baths/bubble baths. Give her showers.
Give her vitamin C.
Wear cotton undies and loose clothing.
Regarding the pool, I don't know but I think being in a pool is similiar to being in a bath. The prolonged water exposure allows bacteria a chance to enter the body.
Wipe from front to back!
Make sure she washes her hands *before* she goes to the bathroom. This is actually more important for everyone than washing afterward.
Make sure she is wiping after she goes to the bathroom from front to back
the chlorine always helps kill bacteria in the pool, so i don't think that's true.
Yogurt and cranberry juice works MAGICALLY with preventing any infection "down there"
Make sure she practices good hygiene and if she is taking bubble baths...stop. As far as the swimming pool goes, I have never heard anyone say that before.
This goes for yeast infections, but it probably can't hurt- don't allow her to play in a wet bathingsuit. After she gets out of the pool, have her put something dry on.
UTI's can occur anytime bacteria is introduced into the urethra. It's not likely she'd get it from swimming in a pool if it is adequately chlorinated and cleaned regularlly.
Make sure she wipes front to back after using the bathroom.
If these UTI's continue you may want to consider having her evaluated by a pediatric urologist.
I would assume that at five she is completely potty trained and not wearing any sort of pull- up. Make sure she is wearing cotton underwear, drinking plenty of water and cranberry juice, ask her and make here aware of having to go to the bathroom, I know my nephew wants to hold it until the last possible second and that is not good. Wash hands before and after. Wipe from front to back, make sure she isnt get into the "back" area and wiping the bacteria up front.
I havent heard about catching a uti from a pool. Its cholorinated so I would think that would kill it. If that was the case, I would of constantly been having them as I lived in a pool in the summer.
Good luck, sounds like you are doing everything you possibly can do, some kids are just prone to infections.
Wash her very thoroughly and have her practice wiping habits so you can check she is doing it correctly from front to back. Give her 2 showers a day for now and see if that prevents. Unless the MD prescribed the cranberry capsules, I would give only the juice. Most pools are chemically treated so I would doubt that is cause but you never know.
