Bllod sugar level and metabolic syndrome?

Question:
My blood test came back and said my blood sugar level was 166, pre-diabetic they said. Well now I read that soda can give you the same symptons and cause metabolic syndrome, I do drink about 6 cans of diet soda a day, what do you think? I am stopping the soda and switching to coffee!

Cannot go back for another blood test just yet, had cortizone injection in neck, this will elevate blood sugar leveles also, had 2, one more left, then blood test.

Answers:
Instead of switching to coffee, make green tea and drink it as iced tea.
I honestly don't think switching from soda to coffee will make a large different. You inidicated you were consuming diet soda.

As diet soda has no carbs, it would have no impact on your sugar level. If you add milk, half-and-half, or sugar to your coffee, the carbohydrates in those products could raise your sugar levels.

I recommend you check out the American Diabetes Association's web pages on pre-diabetes at (http://www.diabetes.org/pre-diabetes.jsp...

Good luck to you!
yes your sugar intake was too much.have the MD order a fasting and 2 hour glucose tests...this will tell how bad ya relly are w/sugar...
Sometimes diet drinks have the effect of raising your insulin level, which in turn makes you crave sugar/food, and that can raise your blood sugar level. Instead of soda or coffee, I would drink water or seltzer water if you want that "fizz" like the diet soda. Caffeine also has the effect of messing with your insulin levels, because it messes with cortisol levels, hormones in your body that control energy and hunger/insulin. Switching to coffee isn't going to help, and might have the same bad effect. IMHO, I would wean yourself off the soda and onto water, green tea, or seltzer.

Cortisone will definitely mess with your sugar levels. Be very wary of what you eat. If you start to feel dizzy or have heart palpatations, check with your doc right away, they could be signs of your sugar being too high.

I would be more wary of what types of foods you are eating. Stay away from carbohydrates...bread, pasta, starchy foods like potatoes. Start writing down everything that goes into your mouth, and see where most of the calories are coming from. Are they from protein, or more from carbohydrates?

I would do a search on the Internet for syndrome X.
