Appoinment with surgeon for gallstones?

Okay, I've been diagnosed with gallstones. I made a follow-up appointment with a surgeon to see what I have to do about them, but I was wondering.. what should I expect at this appointment? Is he going to just talk to me and tell me about it? or will there be some kind of exam?

Don't believe the person who said their gall stones were dissolved by pills, this is impossible. When you see the surgeon he will probably just do a verbal history. Stuff like what kind of pain you had, where the pain is or was, was it after eatting a particularly fatty meal. She/he may do an exam of palpating your tummy, but there should be no invasive exams. Believe me you want to deal with this, gall stones can get out of the gallbladder and cause an obstruction, and you don't want pancreatitis.

I used to have gallstones and hated the fact that I would need surgery to get rid of them. One of my friend gave me a website for all natural herbs and formulae and it was immensely cheaper. I tried it and my gallstones dissolved totally. When I went back to my doctor he said that what I did was irresponsible because I should have used the surgery. The surgeon will look at and possibly take additional xrays (it's called "cover the backside"). They will physically feel the outside of the affected area and lightly apply pressure. An appointment for removal will be set up. A word of advice that your potential surgeon will confirm: Let them take the gall bladder and all. The cholesterol deposits that form the mass called gallstones can reform if you don't. That, of course, results in another removal. Total removal avoids this and other possible complications with your gallbladder later. I had mine removed in 2000. There were no gallstones, that's why it was hard to detect my problem. 3 abdominal sonograms, a dye cast, and a hydroscan later, BINGO! My gallbladder was functioning at only 25% ( out of 100). I had gallbladder contractions--that'll make you "loose your religion!" Not a missed body part from this answerer, trust me!
