Do you need a prescription to buy those glucose test strips?

Question:
I don't have diabetes, but it runs in my family. I like to monitor my blood sugar every week. I noticed that pharmacies carry them behind the counter, as well as drug testing kits, etc. But how about those glucose test strips? Thanks so much.

Answers:
Hey Epic,

No, you do not need a prescription. You can buy them OTC at any pharmacy.
It might also help for you to know the symptoms of type 2 diabetes as they appear gradually and are more vague than those associated with type 1 diabetes. Symptoms include feeling tired or ill, frequent urination (especially at night), unusual thirst, weight loss, blurred vision, frequent infections and slow wound healing.

Insatiable thirst, insatiable hunger, blurred vision and chronic fatigue were the big ones for me before I was diagnosed 5 years ago.

I hope you will choose to get this under control now so you don't have to deal with the frustration, fear and high cost of diabetes.

I also hope you will bless and be blessed today.
.
Yes you can buy them without a prescription, but they are expensive.
No you are not required to have a prescription to buy glucose test strips, They can be purchased over the counter only thing is they are ridiculously expensive. I have type II and I have had my endocrinologist write me a prescription for them, it dropped the cost of 100 count pack from $119.00 to $45.00. So I would recommend getting a prescription.
As far as it being locked behind the counter, they are so expensive people would definitely want to steal them, so they can sell them for a cheaper amount. Just a security for the pharmacy.
You can get the glucometer, test strips and lancets without a prescription. Just need one for syringes with needles attached.

It depends on which state that you live in. But, as far as test strips, you should be able to purchase them. If the test strips contain the lancets ( the poking device) then you may need a prescription. I'm sure that this is the case. However, in some states, you can purchase insulin syringes without a prescription. Ideally, if you are concerned about having Diabetes, you should contact your Doc. Maybe he/she can order tests to be sure that you do or do not have Diabetes.
