Is this Strep Throat or something worse? Medical Professionals only please!!?
Question:
Answers:
ok first of all, signs of STREP THROAT includes:
- fever
- lymph nodes in neck,
- exudates in the throat! (white, ulcer-looking stuff)!
- AND a positive rapid strep test
if you dont have exudates, and since the zpack is not working, you may not have strep throat. Also, was the strep throat test positive? if it was negative, your doc should not be prescribing an antibiotic.
Mono is of course another cause of lymph nodes, sore throat, and fever.
you'll need to ask your doctor to do:
1. monospot, and/or
2. a CBC with differential, which may show ATYPICAL LYMPHOCYTES, and/or
3. an EBV titer (EBV is the virus that causes mono)
Other causes of sore throat may include
- acute viral illness (your typical viruses)
- or acute retroviral syndrome from HIV
of course, you need to go to ur doc to check that out
You should follow up with your doctor tomorrow. There are too many things that it can be. You can get Mono more than once. Good Luck
You should be feeling better by now on 4 days of Z-Pak, and yes, you could have mono. It has surfaced with a vengeance again. They all diagnosed us back then with mono, but never did the bloodwork to back it up. You do have the classic symptoms. You may also have a peritonsillar abscess. These are abscesses that require incision and drainage. You need to go to the ER, back to your doctor, or better yet an ENT who can give you specialized care.
The Z-pak usually works on strep. Thats unusual that it didnot work. Did your doctor do a strep culture or did he just give you a z-pak? You should get tested for Mono. Especially if you had it before. Mono sticks with you for the rest of your life. It can come back. So you are more prone to having it. So you shoudl get tested just incase. Go back to the doctor and tell him/her that your antibiotics are not working. Make sure they swab your throat and do a strep culture this time. You may need some Levaquin or some stronger antibiotics. If the strep culture comes back negative then you should be tested for the mono just in case.
You never get rid of mono. It lays dormant in your body. Its possible that you may be experiencing another bout of Mono. Best bet would be to go to the doc
That does sound like mono. Go to the doc and requst a mono spot. It is a myth that you can only get mono once
