Help with tonsilitis please?

Question:
Is there anything I can do to ease it? I am stuck in a remote little village with the only GP there being a quack.
Do you know anything I can get at a pharmacy?

Answers:
If you do have an infection you may need antibiotics if it is bacterial and you would HAVE to go to a doctor for that. But to ease the pain, you can buy children's liquid Motrin, Benadryl, and Maalox. Follow the instructions on the boxes to determine how much you should take. MIX ALL MEDS TOGETHER, GARGLE AND SWALLOW. It will soothe your throat and stomach. Make sure not to drink or eat anything for a few minutes after you take the meds.

EDIT: No disrespect intended, but I'm not sure where Dr. Frank (below) works or has had his experience, but it apparently has not been with pediatrics! I have been in family practice for many, many years, most of which has been with a physician who primarily sees children. During the winter, we see confirmed Strep at least once a day.and as Dr. Frank explained, that requires antibiotics. So, even though I don't have '6 years of medical school and 4 years of additional training' I do recommend that if you have a severe sore throat, pus pockets in the back of your throat, high fever, nausea, etc.you should see a doctor. It can't hurt and it might save you a lot of problems in the future!

JOY
can you get anywhere else? I guess not - nhs walk in centre might help.
if not, then painkillers, tcp maybe, salt gargles...
gargle with asprin .. and drink lots of fluids

get well soon x
Penicilin is the only way, your local quack should get you it even he can't deny obvoise tonsilitus
you can take soluable pain killers and gargle with itfor a few moments ?? soluable in water that is. but your pharmacy will tell you the best solution with out going to your doctor, after all they are doctors too.
You can get an antiseptic throat spray at the pharmacy to help ease it. However, you really do need to get to a doctor so he can prescribe you antibiotics to clear the infection up.
If this is actually tonsilitis you need antibiotics. Your quack of a doctor should be able to give you these as you only need a cheap generic antibiotic.
Can't rememeber the name (something by vicks) that you spray at the back of the throat that numbs the pain, also (forgotten the name) little sucking sweets with a cinamon taste that also numbs the throat. both products are really good.. take ibuprophen to ease the swelling.
If I rememeber the names I'll come back & edit it!
have u tryed ice cream or gargul with cold salt water
If you have any TCP in, dilute a little in warm water and gargle regularly with this otherwise add some salt to warm water and gargle with this instead, or if you have any dispersible aspirin put one in water and gargle. It will relieve the soreness but none of the above will taste that pleasant but will help fight the infection. If you have any honey, take a teaspoon of this as it will ease the soreness and drinks lots to keep the throat moist.Get well soon and hope these suggestions help.

saltwater and vinigar. warm water.
Hmm it is a good job you have a medical degree which allows you to judge someone who spent at least 6 years at medical school and then had a minimum of 4 years of additional training before going into practice!

As it happens most people with sore throats don't really need to go anywhere near a doctor anyway. Statistically 85% or sore throats are viral and nothing is going to affect their duration. Overall antibiotics given for sore throat result in no more than a 24 hour reduction in symptoms. There is of course the odd very severe streptococcal infection that is the exception and could be dangerous if not treated and occasionally a pnemococcal sore throat can occur and proceed to cause pneumococcal meningitis, I have only seen 2 of these in my career.

Overall supportive measures are advised, paracetamol and/or ibuprofen ( if no contraindications ), will help both fever and discomfort, plenty of cool fluids are soothing and also help. NEVER gargle with either salt water, which is now considered both unhelpful and potentially dangerous, nor aspirin which is irritant. Diflam or chloraseptic are fine.

For safetys sake if you feel things are not going well one has to say you must seek medical advice.
I find Decquacaine lozengers help, you can get them in Boots and I think most chemists would stock them or something similar.
dissolve 2 soluble asprin in half glass water and gargle with it then swallow it. only take if ur over 16 and not allergic to aspirin. also strepsils or similar anti bacterial lozenges will help. u could also take paracetamol 4 x a day if its really bad as no interaction with aspirin. if this does not help u really need to see a doc
