There are about 40 different types of sarcoma and all of them can be treated. Sarcoma is a rare disease and because of this it is highly recommended that the patient be treated at a major Sarcoma Center by a sarcoma specialist. Because sarcoma is rare, very few oncologists have treated the disease. In the past many mistakes were made by doctors unfamiliar with the disease, now there are sarcoma specialist that deal exclusively with treating bone and soft tissue sarcoma. They will be able to guide your wifes niece.
You do not mention which type of sarcoma your wifes niece has, nor do you mention the stage or grade of tumor. Basically there are two major types of sarcoma . . bone cancer and soft tissue sarcoma. There are three major types of bone sarcoma, Ewings, Osteosarcoma, and Chrondosaroma.
Soft tissue sarcoma is a disease of the muscles, joints, tendons in the body. There are many different types, some more aggressive than others.
Survival from sarcoma depends on the type, location of tumor, stage, and grade of disease. Survival also depends on
the patients overall health, age, and response to treatment.
Depending on the above factors . . sarcoma is life threatening, but also treatable. Successful treatment can lead to remission and hopefully long term 'cure'. Sarcoma is difficult, but treatable and there are survivors.
